Törggelen in South Tyrol
Feldthurns/Velturno, the Capital of Törggelen
The Törggelen Trio: Wine, Chestnuts, and Picked Meats
"Torggl“ – that's what wine presses used to be called in South Tyrol. The name for this old tradition comes from this word. In early October, after the harvest was brought in and the work was all done, the locals could begin Törggelen. The harvested goods could then be enjoyed. The sitting rooms of the farmers are converted into improvised inns. New Wine is served, barley soup, deep-fried pastries, hearty pickled meats, homemade smoked sausage, bacon, and dumplings. Jelly doughnuts and freshly roasted chestnuts (called "Keschtn" in the regional dialect of German) form the meal’s crowning glory.
Here in Feldthurns/Velturno, you’ll find vineyards and entire chestnut groves at altitudes of up to 850 meters above sea-level. The optimal climatic and soil conditions are why this quaint tradition is so popular here in Feldthurns/Velturno. You’ll be hard-pressed to find cozier, more-authentic Törggele inns in all of South Tyrol.
